Brief Description

Seoul National University honors the ideals of liberal education and aims to teach students a lifelong love of learning that will form the basis for continuous personal growth. As Korea's leading research university, Seoul National University is committed to diversifying its student body and faculty, fostering global exchange, and promoting path-breaking research in all fields of knowledge.

Seoul National Universty has renewed its vision in 2020, which is “A Community of Knowledge, Leading the Future”. In order to achieve this vision, Seoul National Universith has set four missions as the following:

First, Fostering Global Convergence Talent.
SNU fosters practical and cooperative skills through the implementation of a convergence, “L-shaped” education system that lowers the barriers between different majors and invites in-depth interdisciplinary discussions. Also, SNU enables students to explore various perspectives through student-directed education programs and interdisciplinary courses such as “Interdisciplinary Approaches.” Furthermore, SNU has established “Reading Seminar” course for character development, which enables students to reflect on the important values in life.

Second, Building an Innovative Knowledge Ecosystem.
Through the establsihment of “Data Science Graduate Schol”, SNU is trying to foster digital innovators equipped with domain knowledge and data science skills. Following the global academic trend toward providing data-based education, the “Data Science Graduate School” offers a new educational model and aims to be the hub of interdisciplinary research that preemptively responds to global issues. In addition, SNU is implementing 10-10 project, which will actively support ten future-oriented academic fields so that scholars are equipped with leading research capabilities to create “Top 10” world-leading programs. The 10-10 Project will greatly enhance SNU’s research capabilities and strengthen SNU’s status as a research-oriented university that makes contributions to global peace and progress.

Third, Creating Knowledge-Based Social Values.
Seoul National University has a duty to share knowledge with our society and the communities around us through various social service activities. Students can explore opportunities for various social service activities by participating in an educational curriculum that has direct relevance to social welfare. Students can learn the true value of volunteer work, global citizenship and human rights. Also, SNU is creating various knowledge sharing programs. SNU develops and provides online courses (K-MOOC, SNUon, edX) to meet the intellectual needs of the general public, and opens its cultural programs to the community and affirms the importance of communal exchanges.

Fourth, Establishing a Foundation for Sustainable University Development.
Seoul National University is building a future-oriented smart multi-campus in Siheung city, a global R&D campus to lead the fourth industrial revolution and support innovative growth engines. Also, it will be an eco-friendly smart campus that responds to future changes in education environment and saves energy through ICT. Moreover, SNU is etablishing a system for university innovation. University Innovation Center was recently establsihed to systematically and comprehensively promote university innovation. The University Innovation Center will act as a think-tank that will pioneer the higher education of the future by sponsoring mid- to long-term research projects through extensive data analysis.
