AUA Youth Forum 2018: Healthy Oceans

The second AUAYF took place from 13-16 November 2018 in Bali, Indonesia, alongside the AUA Executives Meeting 2018. Organized by AUA Executive Presidency 2018-2019, Universitas Indonesia, the theme of the 2018 forum was ‘Healthy Oceans’. Student delegations from all AUA member universities partook in the four-day event. Special guest lectures were delivered by experts in the field of marine biology and conservation. The students embarked on field trips for beach cleaning to learn about the importance of eco-tourism. They also took part in interactive workshops learning to make their own reusable and eco-friendly bags. Working closely in groups, participants brainstormed and formulated solutions to address the issue of marine pollution. After presenting their findings and solutions to delegates of the AUA Executives Meeting on the final day of the forum, participants received direct feedback on their presentations from the AUA Executives.

Students' Testimonials

“In each session, we had an opportunity to talk and share our ideas with friends and lecturers. For me, I think it was a precious time to talk to them because what they have taught us cannot be found in a textbook. It is one of the greatest experiences that cannot be found in the classroom.

Being a trash hero was fun. We picked up all the plastic and harmful things that can destroy the beautiful ocean. I believe that from now on, at least the AUA participants, will help reduce this problem and this action will inspire other people around them. In the ‘Bye Bye Plastic Bag’ session we made our own bags from old T-shirts which is eco-friendly and free. At this time I promised myself not to use plastic bags anymore!

This was my first time working with people from different countries and it went awesome. We exchanged our opinions and knowledge. We learnt to be open-minded. Every group did amazing in front of the executive members.

Thank you once again for everything and last but not least ‘Once AUA, Always AUA!’”
