Universitas Indonesia Hosted AUA Students Update 2018 on “LIFE BELOW WATER”

On 8-21 July 2018, Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) and Universitas Indonesia successfully conducted AUA Students Update 2018 on “Life Below Water”. A two-week academic and cultural program for students of the AUA member institutions. The goal of this program is to encourage participants to have a broaden intellectual, and awareness on the importance of life below water which has been a global issue and challenge faced by modern society.

There are 13 undergraduate students from the 7 AUA member universities: Chulalongkorn University, National University of Singapore, Nazarbayev University, Seoul National University, University of Malaya, and University of Yangon, Universitas Indonesia

For the academic program, the students got some interactive lectures that was taught by experts from Universitas Indonesia. The interactive lectures cover seven sub-topics consist ofMarine bio diversity, Marine Environmental Protection, Marine Legal Aspect, Marine Health Protection, Ocean and Coastal Community, Marine Economical Affair, and Maritime Resources. To deepen their knowledge about the topic, they also went to some relevant institutions like World Wildlife Foundation-Indonesia,Task Force115, and the Sea-World aquarium. Thevisit to the institutions that are related to the topic of the course provides opportunities to the students to have some case by case discussion concerning Life Below Water.

To give an introduction and a better understanding to Indonesian culture, all the participants were also given some sessions to learn about the Indonesian language, dances and traditional musical instruments. A well spent weekend also prepared for all the participants as they got the chance to travel to a cultural city of Bandung, to experience the Sundanese local culture and cuisine.In Bandung, they went to Saung Angklung Udjo to watch traditional music show, went to Asian-African Museum to know more about the Asian History and also the Nu-Art Sculpture Gallery to know deeper about the Indonesia’s refinement.

This kind of student’s mobility thematic program is very important to be conducted as an AUA yearly program, because it is not only benefited the students, but also will strengthen the friendships and collaboration between AUA member institutions through receiving and sending students.
