The 2nd International Conference on Water Technologies (ICWT) in Collaboration with Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) was successfully held in a hybrid mode at the Water Innovation Center, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay on 1-2 December 2022.

Release of the abstract book by the dignitaries

Under the theme of “Materials and Technologies for Water Remediation”, the conference aimed to promote the development of sustainable technologies for water and wastewater treatment. Research papers, presentations, and plenary sessions addressed the needs through scientific discussions by exploring the following sub-themes: Nanomaterials for Water Purification, Biophysical Separation & Remediation, Photocatalysis for Water Treatment, Membranes, Physio-chemical & Thermal Processes, Oil Water Separation, Challenges in Water Purification & Desalination and Sensors.

Poster session


The conference commenced with an inaugural session. The welcome address was made by Prof. Shobha Shukla, Professor MEMS and Professor-in-charge of water center WICTRE at IIT Bombay, India. This was followed by Opening remarks delivered by Prof. S. Sudarshan, Deputy Director of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. The abstract book was released and the audience was addressed by Prof. S. Manoharan, Director General, PDPU Gandhinagar, India. This was followed by an address by Mr. Unnikrishnan, CEO of IITB Monash research academy, IIT Bombay, Prof. K. Kaliappan, Dean Strategy and Prof. N. N. Vishwanathan, HOD MEMS, IIT Bombay. An overview of WICTRE collaboration was provided by Prof. Sumit Saxena, Professor MEMS, IIT Bombay, India. The inaugural session ended with an overview of Indian Desalination Association and Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences provided by their representatives.    

The Inaugural session was followed by a technical session. The technical session consisted of plenary, invited, contributory talks, panel discussion, networking lunch and dinner, and workshop along with a poster session on both days. The participants not only learned about the latest technological advancements and innovations in water technology through each of these activities but also were able to connect to experts and peers in the field.

ICWT 2022 provided different sessions including keynote speeches, oral presentations, and a poster session on various research areas. Comprising 6 sessions and plenary lectures, the conference included 131 participants. Besides presenting their own research contributions, attendees had fruitful discussions with experts and guest speakers within two days.

The conference concluded with a workshop led by Professor Anita Mahadevan-Jansen, who discussed leadership qualities and the skills necessary for climbing the career ladder and achieving success.

Overall, participants of the ICWT 2022 explored the future development of technological solutions and shared ideas regarding novel materials systems. The organizing committee has selected research papers that will be considered for publication in a special issue of Environmental Science & Pollution Research (Springer), Journal of Materials Research (Springer), Water Reuse (IWA), and Materials Open Research (T&F).
