Speech from Prof. Dr. Yong Zuliana Zubairi
Since its outbreak, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown how vulnerabilities in healthcare systems can have profound implications for economic progress and social cohesion. The Overseas Study Program aimed to cultivate the culture of challenge-driven innovative ideation by tapping into diverse perspectives and talent resulting in technologies and solutions.
This program has provided participants with the fundamental knowledge needed to solve global pandemic issues using a holistic approach. During the 5-day online program, participants were exposed to various activities that covered a series of technical talks, workshops, hackathon competitions, and an online bootcamp. During the hackathon competition, students could network and work with their peers from all over the world.

Experts from various fields were invited as speakers, mentors, and facilitators to support participants in creating solutions to global pandemic issues. They highlighted the vulnerabilities in the healthcare systems and inequality in many domains of our day-to-day life. Nevertheless, the pandemic has accelerated many solutions and adaptations such as digital transformation, vaccine discovery in a short time in history, virtual education, and working setting, eventually paving the path for the reformation of many aspects of our life. Indeed, this has fueled the hackathon team to pick up these real-world challenges to formulate tangible solutions.

The program has enabled young participants to demonstrate the solutions that impact all of us and foster and empower society through science and technology. This program included participants from a total of 6 member universities from 6 countries, allowing them to network and enrich their ideas and foster innovative solutions. The participants demonstrated a strong sense of commitment to the hackathon.

From a total of 6 groups, three winning teams were selected by judges and were awarded cash prizes. All the participants were acknowledged for their participation and received a certificate of attendance.
